Mooton

Learn how to use Mooton

Welcome! In this guide you will learn the basics of Mooton and how to use it.

Mooton is a web application, and currently, there is no iOS or Android app available. However, this comes with some advantages: no downloads, no installations, and no updates are required. Just use a modern web browser and any device: smartphone, tablet, notebook or laptop.

Words

When you come across an unfamiliar word or phrase while reading, listening, or watching something, add it to Mooton. Avoid learning words in isolation. Instead, include examples, synonyms, collocations, and images.

Often, a single word can have multiple definitions, so be sure to add them all. Well, almost all, because some English words, for example, can have dozens of definitions. :) You can add definitions both in your native language and your target language, depending on your level in the target language.

Adding a new Word

To add a new word click the + button.

Word actions

Word list and cards

There are two type of word views: list and cards. Use the view switcher on the right side of the action bar to toggle between them.

Word list

In the list view every word has it's own menu, that you can open by clicking ⋮ button.

Bulk operations

You can perform various actions on multiple words simultaneously.

To do that, in the list view open a word menu and click 'Select'. Then choose additional words by clicking checkboxes and select one of available actions:

When you click 'Add tags' or 'Remove tags', a window will appear where you can select the tags you want to add or remove.

Cards

When you are in the card view you can use card actions.

Word order

You can sort words alphabetically, by creation date, or shuffle them randomly

Finding words is quick and easy — simply start typing in the search field located at the top of the window and results will appear almost instantly.

Spaced repetition

Mooton will automatically schedule words for review based on how well you already know them. Words that you know well will appear less often, and words you don't know well will appear more frequently.

It's not necessary to add all the new words to the spaced repetition. Add words gradually, for example, 20-30 per day, depending on your workload and goals.

In the main action bar, there is a switcher displaying the number of words you need to review (repeat) for the current day. Click to open the words for review.

Below the card, you'll find three buttons:

After pressing one of the buttons, the next card will appear. If you press the green button, the word won't reappear that day, orange - it will appear one more time, red - twice.

Import words

You can import words from text with delimeters, from a Google spreadsheet or generate with AI. To import words click the '+' button at the top of the window.

From text

Format: word;definition or translation;pronunciation.
The word is mandatory, while the definition and pronunciation are optional.
Example: hello;salut

From Google spreadsheet

Create new Spreadsheet or use an existing one. Ensure the spreadsheet is shared publicly (you can enable public access temporarily and revoke it after the import is complete). Copy and paste the spreadheet URL. In the spreadsheet, use 1 to 3 columns. 1st column: word, 2nd column: definition or translation, 3rd column: pronunciation (transcription)

Stats

You can track your learning progress. Click the Mooton logo and select Stats. In the window that appears, you'll find a bar chart displaying your activity across two key metrics:

To switch between the metrics click the chart legend below the chart. You can view your stats for different timeframes: Week, Month, 3 Months, Year, or All Time.

Settings

To open Setting click the moon logo and select Settings. There are three tabs: Account, Languages, and Dictionaries.

Account

Here you can set or change your password. It's not necessary if you use your Google account. You can also delete your account here. Click on 'Account deletion', then click the 'Delete my account' button and confirm the deletion. NOTE: Your account will be closed immediately. Your data will be permanently deleted from servers within 30 days.

Languages

My language
My language is your native language, but you can also set it to your target language. For example, if your native language is Spanish and you are learning English, you can set it to English if your proficiency level is high enough and you prefer using only English definitions.

I learn
In Mooton you can learn multiple languages simultaneously. Click the 'Add language' button to add a language. Each language has its own word list.

Dictionaries

You can use external dictionaries like Collins, Oxford, Cambridge, Longman and others to look up detailed definitions, synonyms, and examples for better understanding and context.

To select the dictionaries you want to use, click the 'Select' button and pick them from the window that appears.
